JOIN US IN CELEBRATING DAUGHTERS!

Earlier this month, honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Status of Women Canada, announced that with strong Canadian support, the United Nations General Assembly has designated October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. The purpose of the day is to recognize the deep rooted gender inequality that exists between boys and girls and to highlight the discrimination girls face worldwide. This is a promising step forward in helping girls access and exercise their human rights. Not only does it serve as an international acknowledgement of the obstacles girls are facing but it is also a call to action for all of us to do better and raise the status of the girl child due to recent events, it is clear the Asian immigrant population in Canada needs to do better.

Read Minister Rona Abrose on why Canada pushed so strongly for the Day of the Girl Child.

Why We Moved to Edmonton and Why We Will Stay

ICWA's Project Coordinator, Mahvish Parvez was featured in the Edmonton Journal today. She was asked about her own personal experience and why she now calls Edmonton home. We as an organization are very proud of her. She represents the successful immigrant integration experience that ICWA works tirelessly in promoting. We want other immigrant men and women and famiilies to feel a sense of belonging and purpose when they come to Edmonton. We are grateful that Mahvish has chosen to share in our mission and give back to other immigrants.

A sense of belonging is of utmost importance for people.

"I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself " - Maya Angelou
